HeLF Longitudinal Survey: see helf email list

At last week’s 10 year Anniversary event we launched a new HeLF survey which focuses on our members roles and responsibilities. This is similar to the survey we conducted in 2009. The survey will provide HeLF members with information about the nature of the ‘Head of e-Learning’ role in UK higher education institutions and how it has changed and adapted over the last decade. Knowing more about who we are and how our roles have developed over time will enable us to plan for our future development.

The survey takes approx. 15 minutes to complete and all data collected in this survey will be held anonymously. No personal data is asked for or retained. Closing date for responses is the 22nd of November.

We will feedback the results of the survey, also providing a comparison of how things have changed over the years, at one of our upcoming events.

City University Event: HeLF 10th Birthday Bash

The 10th Anniversary event seemed a great success with over 35 people attending. The following describes (in their words) what they are taking away from the event:

• Kyriaki's spectrum and what it may mean for the role of a Head of e-learning
• Diana's conversational framework as conceptual framework for a Learning & Teaching Strategy, also using it for academic staff development
• Gartner Hype Cycle
• What do we want our learning and teaching mic to look like

• Developing digital literacy to enable new pedagogy

• Re-use / repurpose strategies from the past to manage large groups
• thinking about the roles our Staff do and how they fit the institution
• Focus on tools rather than policies - if helps then they will use

• Kyriaki's spectrum of ed.tech work and moving ed techs to be more an L&T "end" as change agents

Report on our inaugural meeting

HeLF ... how did it all start? Well, some context is available in an article by Dr Paul Brett in SEDA, Issue 5.2 (June 2004), entitled Heads of e-Learning Forum - A strategic voice for e-learning from UK HEIs. (http://www.seda.ac.uk/?p=5_4_1&pID=5.2).

This reflects on the discussion at the first meeting, outlining the initial drivers with the observation of HeLF as a thriving discussion around sharing our thoughts on issues such as HEFCE's e-Learning Strategy, electronic submission of student work and of course the recent dramatic developments of UK-eU.

Wow, ten years later some things are still hot topics :-)

Let the celebrations begin ...

The Heads of e-Learning Forum is 10 years old this year. To celebrate this achievement our 6th November event at City University will focus on drawing reflections from the last 10 years to articulate the future of technology enhanced learning and the Head of e-Learning.

We've arranged a set of really exciting speakers, including Prof Diana Laurillard, who spoke at our inaugural meeting in December 2003 at the University of Wolverhampton. The title for her talk is, reflections on pedagogical developments: past and future ambitions and realities.

The other talks will shift the focus on many aspects of technology enhanced learning within UK HE, including;

• Richard Walker, (University of York): Reflections on developments with learning technologies: York’s journey and some discussion on sector trends (2003 -2013)
• Kyriaki Anagnostopoulou, (University of Bath): Past, present and future: The role of ‘Head of e-Learning’ in UK higher education institutions
• David Walker, (University of Dundee): Scottish Initiatives in e-Learning: Enhancement-led Innovation
